We digress. If you’re pondering where to head off on your gap year, Peru’s a great place to start. Here are just a handful of the endless Peruvian delights to whet your appetite:-

Cusco

High up in the Andes, the ancient city of Cuzco is the gateway to the legendary Machu Picchu and claims to be the oldest continually inhabited city of the Americas. Cobbled streets lined with gigantic walls remind visitors of the timeless nature of this enigmatic city, deemed the centre of the world by the Incas. If you want to volunteer abroad, Cusco offers the opportunity of working with underprivileged children or, if you prefer, teaching English in a primary school. While most travellers head for the museums and churches, art lovers lingering in Cusco should make time for a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Apacheta Art Gallery.

Machu Picchu

Just a four hour train ride from Cusco you’ll find the legendary city of Machu Picchu, a stone citadel built by the long lost Inca tribe. Standing over 7,500 ft high in the Andean Mountains, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to some of the world’s most famous Inca ruins, such as: Koriancha, the Temple of the Sun and the Intihuatana, a limestone block used in ancient tribal ceremonies. For the adventurous, a trek along the Inca trail to Machu Picchu will take you along ancient footpaths through the Sacred Valley in Patallacta and Runkuraqay with ruins in abundance to distract you along the way.

Fans of movie trivia will be fascinated to learn that the 1950s movie ‘The Secret of the Incas’ starring Charlton Heston was the first major Hollywood production set on location in Cusco and Macho Picchu.

Arequipa (La Cuidad Blanca – the White City)

Peru’s second largest city is often overlooked by those desperate to get to Cusco. Its name comes from the countless Spanish colonial buildings constructed from white volcanic rock (sillar). Referred to by the Incas as the ‘place behind the volcanoes’ Arequipa is hemmed in on all sides by volcanoes, deserts, canyons, salt lakes and hot springs. It’s ideal for acclimatising and no matter what your particular ‘thing’ is, the chances are you can do it in Arequipa, including: mountain biking, trekking, white water rafting or simply sauntering through museums and churches. If you do visit be sure to see the Inca mummies on display in the Santury Museum – v. scary!

Lima
The chaotic, sprawling desert capital city of Peru is often more famous for its fuzzy fog than its beauty but look a little deeper and you’ll discover archaeological treasures on display in museums intermingling with a vast range of restaurants and nightlife. If your preference is for more practical work abroad, then Lima is also the place for you. Volunteers are needed for endless excavation projects around the ceremonial sites of Huaca Huantille and Huaca Pucllana, which date back to the first and fifth centuries. Imagine being the first person in nearly 2,000 years to see a precious artefact. Now that would be something to brag about.

Exploring Peru is even easier now with the Pan-American Highway connecting some of its most famous attractions. From there you can explore the whole western side of South America.

Of course, we haven’t even mentioned Lake Titicaca, the surfers’ paradise at Mancora or Chiclayo with its ancient tombs to name but a few – or the food (but not the guinea pigs!).  Well, we have to leave you something to discover for yourself. See you there!

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen may just be the world capital of cycling. Not only did the city offer the world’s first public bike scheme in 1995, years before Boris stole the idea for London, but over a third of all journeys in the Danish capital utilise pedal power. It’s not hard to see why, with over 400 kilometres of dedicated cycling lanes in the city, many segregated from traffic, and even a specialised traffic light system for those travelling on two wheels. In total, over 1 million kilometres a day are cycled on the city’s streets, and Copenhagen locals are thought of as the most stylish and confident of the world’s cycling citizens. Cycling routes here even lead out into the glorious Zealand countryside, with beaches, forests and hills all within a short distance, making the city an ideal base for anyone thinking about cycling holidays this summer.

Beijing, China

There are nine million bicycles in Beijing, or so the famous song says. In reality there are likely to be far more than this conservative estimate, with most of Beijing’s 19 million residents owning at least one bicycle. Yet, with increasing industrialisation, and more and more roads being built every year, Beijing folk are starting to turn away from their beloved bicycles and switching to more modern forms of transport such as subways or the personal auto-mobile. So if you want to sample Beijing’s unique bicycling culture before it vanishes forever, now is the time to visit.

 Rwanda

Rwanda isn’t usually thought of as a big cycling destination, but things on the ground are rapidly changing in this land-locked and impoverished nation. A pioneering charity scheme, Bikes to Rwanda, sent thousands of bicycles here back in 2006, and investment in well-maintained track routes such as the Congo Nile Trail have started attracting tourists and enthusiasts. Yet it is the natural attractions that really wow here, with undulating hills hiding picturesque, winding paths that snake through verdant coffee farms and fragrant tea plantations, all adding up to make for Africa’s finest cycling terrain.

Portland, Oregon

This hip Stateside city has long drawn plaudits for its intelligent implementation of bicycle-friendly schemes, but now people are waking up to the fact that Portland really is a cyclist’s paradise. Everywhere you go in this charming city you see people on bicycles, it’s just a fact of everyday life. And the nearby Oregon countryside, with alpine mountains and temperate forests, offers superb mountain biking trails for cycling fans of all ages. Safe bike tracks, wonderful scenery and friendly locals make this part of the world a great choice for bike-oriented family holidays.

 Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The clichéd image of Amsterdam is one of charming canals and thousands of people blissfully gliding through the cobbled streets on bicycle, and the reality isn’t far off this idyllic image. More than 40% of all journeys in the Dutch capital are taken on bikes, and rail stations such as Centraal boast bicycle storage units capable of holding more than 7000 bicycles, perfect for commuters. While in many parts of the world cyclists are scared off the roads by aggressive drivers who simply outnumber them, in Amsterdam the opposite is true, it’s just far too difficult for cars to navigate down many of the old town’s tight alleys and narrow streets. Bicycles are well and truly in the ascendancy here.

So it’s not surprising that many places got left behind, particularly in the 19^th century when the rush for gold and other minerals had the population haring about with cartoon dollar signs in their eyes.

So, imagine you’re hiking through the wilds of North America when suddenly you happen upon the urban equivalent of the Marie Celeste. A fully developed town, devoid of human life and looking like its residents left to go to Wal-Mart and forgot to come back.

You haven’t stumbled into a horror movie or onto the set of post-apocalyptic zombie fest The Walking Dead. Rather, it’s a ghost town, hundreds of which speckle the U.S landscape. Creepy, chilling and maybe even haunted, here’s some that you should pencil in on your adventure tours, if you’re feeling brave enough that is…

 Grafton, Utah

Lying just a mile south of the famous Zion National Park is the lonely old ghost town of Grafton. Built for and by cotton growers in 1859, by 1864 around 28 families lived there. The outbreak of the Black Hawk War between the US settlers and Native Americans led to Grafton being evacuated. Flooding, which had troubled the town from its birth, discouraged most from moving back and the population plummeted, with the last residents leaving in 1944. Today, a schoolhouse which you may recognize from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, several houses and cabins remain. There is also a graveyard, with gravestones dating from the 1860s which tell sad tales of the many casualties that the Black Hawk War left behind.

 Bodie, California

The first act in the life and death of Bodie, California, is akin to watching a movie with fast-forward pressed. Gold was discovered in ‘them thar hills’ in 1859 and by 1879, the newly built town had a population of almost 7000 including scores of saloons, several banks, and a jail.  But by 1880 the town’s get rich quick merchants were already abandoning Bodie and racing to other promising sites. From then the population declined and the last resident left in 1943. Today, it is kept in a state of ‘preserved decay’, with the remaining buildings even stocked with goods. And if that isn’t enough to send shivers down your spine, apparently, any visitor that steals something from Bodie is cursed with bad luck. You have been warned.

 Ruby, Arizona

Full of murder and mayhem, Ruby was a more colourful town than most. What began as a few miners camping at the base of Montana Peak in the 1870s grew into a 1200-strong town by the 1930s. It witnessed the ‘Ruby Murders’ of the early 1920s, when six people were brutally killed in three separate attacks. Even on a daily basis, Ruby was lawless, a haven for rogues and scoundrels and pretty much exactly like a Sunday afternoon cowboy movie. So dangerous, in fact, that its inhabitants were warned to carry weapons at all times. We can assume they didn’t mean pepper spray. Still, Ruby flourished in the late 1920s and only died when the ore died in 1940. Today, around 25 buildings including the old jail remain, while, chalkboards and desks sit dusty and unused in the old school. Dare you spend a night in there alone?

 Centralia, Pennsylvania

Less creepy and more downright scary, Centralia has been burning from beneath the ground since 1962. A rich coal seam under the town was ignited when a carelessly unquenched fire reached the coal mine. So rich is the seam, in fact, that it is predicted that the fire will keep burning for another 250 years. Centralia was home to over 2000 people at its peak, but now only about 10 remain. Whether they are brave or foolhardy is questionable, as the billowing smoke and steam that pours constantly through the cracks in the ground contains lethal levels of carbon monoxide. With the abandoned buildings and smoke-covered graveyards, it’s hard to decide whether you’re in a post-apocalyptic Hell-on-Earth or you’ve just landed on the set of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video.

 Thurmond, West Virgina

As of 2010, Thurmond had a population of 5. But in the 1870’s, it was a thriving coal town with over 75,000 passengers passing through every year on the C&O railroad. To cope with all the inhabitants Thurmond had its own cinema, restaurants, shops, hotels and all the other trappings of urban living. Increased competition for C&O, prohibition and a couple of major fires in the 1920s were heavy blows and by 1940, most of the big businesses had left. Despite only a few people still dwelling there, most of the buildings remain and it’s now become an ideal location for activity holidays which have sparked the town back to life somewhat, with travellers coming for the superlative white-water rafting waters and staying to explore this particular preserved snap of American history.

Epic Landscapes

The area lies at the south-western tip of New Zealand’s mighty South Island, and was formed from the glaciers that covered much of this region hundreds of thousands of years ago. The landscape here is so enchanting, with capricious waterfalls appearing and disappearing on the mountain sides within the course of a single day, that this is where director Peter Jackson chose to film some of his epic film Lord of the Rings. Clearly the mountains and sea lakes, rich with pods of friendly dolphins, evoke images of myth and legend, a land of giants and gods. One of the finest ways to experience Fiordland is by taking a chartered flight over the area, viewing the majestic peaks and glimmering lakes from above. Yet, to really get to grips with the area’s diverse range of attractions, you have to take matters into your own hands and do a bit of hiking.

Hiking Opportunities

Even mere mortals can enjoy life changing experiences here, with the famed Milford Trek said to be judged as the finest walk on earth. The trek encompasses some 33 miles of trail through winding valleys, across steep hills and finally to the shores of the Sound itself. On the way you will pass through wetlands, across windswept mountains, encounter the achingly picturesque Sutherland Falls and delve through Spartan forests. Though the walk is not particularly long, it tends to take around three days to complete, such is the rough and ready nature of the terrain. However, despite the frequent climbs and treacherous twists and turns, the Milford Trek itself is rated as a moderate walk, making it perfect for beginners and experts alike who wish to embark on walking holidays around the South Island.

Adventure Activities

If walking isn’t quite your thing, the Fiordland area also has plenty of other activities to offer, from paragliding over the mighty fjords, to rock climbing up impossibly steep cliff faces. Kayaking is another popular past-time around these parts, and the calm waters of the fjords make for serene paddling. Ambitious kayakers can try their hand at paddling the length of Milford Sound, 15 kilometres in total, though you may find yourself floating aimlessly as you stare in awe at the surrounding landscapes. With white water rafting, jet skiing, para sailing, windsurfing and swimming also available in the national park area, anyone looking for activity holidays would be well advised to head here.

Stunning Wildlife

Nature lovers, meanwhile, should stay on the lookout for some of New Zealand’s finest endemic species while in Fiordland, with a large population of Kakapo, the world’s only flightless parrot, making their home in this region. Elsewhere you may be able to swim with dolphins, spot indigenous species of bird, stalk red deer and track the migrations of the famous Kiwi, New Zealand’s national bird. The best way to get up close and personal with the amazing array of wildlife here is to hire an experienced guide or ranger to take you to the best spots in Fiordland. They will also be able to advise you on how to minimise your impact on the delicate ecosystem that makes this national park one of the wonders of the world.

What’s more, the region boasts an average of 250 days’ sunshine each year and the driest micro climate in the Pacific Northwest. Add to that, temperatures regularly in the 70s and you’ll soon see why the San Juan Islands are an ideal destination for yacht rental enthusiasts. San Juan Island

Over half of San Juan’s 16,000 strong population live on San Juan Island, which is home to the historic Friday Harbor, a large town with a full-service marina. It’s also a major yachting center within Puget Sound offering many shopping opportunities, interspersed with art galleries, boutiques and the famous whale museum.

Don’t miss the chance to do a spot of whale watching while you’re there. The majestic monochrome mammals are easily seen from San Juan Island through the summer months. It’s believed that several families, or ‘pods’ of Orca whales have made the waters around the islands their home, but these aren’t the only whales you’ll see. The elusive Minke whales travel in groups of only two or three and take a little more patience to capture on film or through binoculars. If you’re really lucky you may catch a glimpse of the huge gray whales too – you’ll know them, they grow up to 50 feet long.

Other wonderful wildlife to watch out for include: sea lions, seals, bald eagles and sea cormorants, to name but a few.

Orcas Island

When you finally manage to pull yourself away from the allure of San Juan Island, visit the Rosario resort on the nearby Orcas Island. This horseshoe shaped paradise, referred to as the ‘Emerald Isle’, has the highest mountains in the San Juan Islands. Rosario Resort is also the former home of Robert Moran who built a five storey retreat for himself in 1906 after being told he only had a couple of years to live. Confounding all medical experts he lived for another 40 years to the grand old age of 86! A tour of his mansion is a must.

If you’re staying long enough and relish the challenge of a hike while you’re ashore, Mount Constitution lies in the Moran State National Park. The summit offers you unrivaled views of the Pacific Ocean and the snow capped peak of Mount Baker. If water sports are more your thing, try a kayaking tour and sail through waters used by the early tribes who once had the islands to themselves and used them for summer fishing camps. Note: keep your eyes own for the colorful sea stars and anemones as you sail.

Sucia Island

No sailing holiday to the San Juan Islands is complete without a stop at the lesser known Sucia Island. Formed through a complicated ‘plunging marine syncline’ geological process, it’s the pinnacle of your Pacific Northwest charter and considered to be one of the best destinations for avid sailors in the area. It’s the largest of a cluster of ten islands, offering ample opportunities to bike, hike, kayak or soak up the sun on one its many deserted coves.

One note of caution, the area is renowned for tides of up to 12 feet high and the further north you are the stronger they can be. While you’re planning your vacation make sure you time your passage through the islands to coincide with favorable tides.  The narrow channels between the islands are prone to swift currents at maximum flood and ebb.

Whatever you’re looking for on your sailing vacation, the islands of the Pacific North West will undoubtedly offer it. Soak in the solitude of a deserted beach, linger in restaurants, visit art galleries, sunbathe on deck or head out in search of sealife and plantlife either in kayaks or on foot. You can be sure this will be a yacht charter to treasure.

The Antarctic explorers are to be commended for their enthusiasm, but a jaunt to the most inhospitable region in the world is an extreme way to celebrate an anniversary, centennial or not. Yet, the sharp leap in numbers neatly illustrates our continued fascination with exploration. Despite our tight grip on technology, man still values a good ol’ tussle with nature.

So here are a few explorers you can follow in the footsteps of without risking frostbite. With sat nav, planned itineraries and modern maps, you shouldn’t have to worry about making a wrong turn either.

David Livingstone

Doctor, missionary and explorer, David Livingstone embarked on three great journeys in Africa. During the first, from 1852 to 1856, he covered around 4300 miles, from Cape Town through Botswana through Zambia to Luanda, naming Victoria Falls along the way. During the second, he sailed up the Zambesi River and became the first European to see Lake Malawi. His last mission took him around Central Africa in a search for the source of the Nile and he died in Zambia in 1873. Whether it’s a safari, an adventure holiday, a sailing holiday or even a city break to Cape Town, Dr Livingstone is your go-to European explorer for Africa.

Samuel De Champlain

De Champlain was a 16^th century French explorer who spent most of his life roving around North America and Canada. He was instrumental in setting up French colonies in the new world and charted much of the coast around Nova Scotia. He began a settlement and established a fur-trading centre in Quebec, although many of the new residents died in the harsh winter. Of course, those wishing to follow in his footsteps have a little more support. Multi-cultural Canada really does have something for everyone, including culture-packed city breaks, magnificent scenery and wildlife and adrena-flineuelled adventure holidays.

Marco Polo

The veracity of Marco Polo’s famous 13^th century book has long been questioned, but if he visited even half the places he said he did, he was still a very busy man indeed. Conveniently for holiday planners, he split his travels into four parts. Book One deals with the Middle East and Central Asia, Two with China and his time serving the Kublai Khan, Three with Japan, Sri Lanka, India and south-east Asia and Africa, while Four details wars among the Mongols and the Russians. An inspiring read, but using other sources is also recommended as Polo not only failed to mention the Great Wall of China he also managed to confuse a rhino with a unicorn.

Jacob Roggeveen

Older travellers wondering whether they are fit for sailing holidays can take heart from Jacob Roggeveen. This Dutch explorer took off in search of the mythical land of Australia at the grand age of 62, setting sail from the Netherlands in 1722. He reached the Falkland Islands, landed at Valdivia in Chile, and then discovered Easter Island on Easter Sunday. He then sailed to Batavia, now Indonesia’s North Jakarta, via Samoa and the Society Islands, including Tahiti. Although he didn’t reach Australia, his  journey through some of the world’s best sailing waters cannot be considered a failure, and provides ample inspiration for those wishing to follow in his wake.

Hernán Cortés

Cortés was a Spanish explorer who overthrew the Aztec empire, by killing the Aztec emperor, Montezuma, in 1521 and claiming Mexico for Spain. He ruled Mexico until 1524 but eventually fell out of favour of the royals. He then slunk back to Spain, where he died a few years later. By all accounts, Cortés was a pretty unpleasant character and his swashbuckling ruthless approach to exploration would certainly be frowned upon today. However, the route on his map provides much inspiration, whether it’s sailing holidays around Cuba, family holidays adventuring on Mexico’s Caribbean peninsula, or a trip to Mexico City, where the ruins of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, are located.

I just have one slight phobia.  My fear of spiders.  Did you know the biggest spiders are tarantulas that grow to 300 mm in size.  300 mm!!  These spiders aren’t the little things that run across your kitchen floor or build pretty webs in your gardens.  These guys eat snakes and lizards and frogs and stuff.  So we can go anywhere as long as there are no spiders. Or at least no oversized members of the species.

There are some great options for keeping ‘active’ and seeing the world.  My friend suggested Venezuela. A six day trek climbing sandstone table mountains (known as tepuys) in a land that Arthur Conan Doyle referred to as the ‘Lost World’.  They also inspired his book of the same name.  See, it’s educational as well!  While you’re there, why not visit the aptly named Devil’s Mountain – Auyan Tepuy- and see the Angel Falls by helicopter – the largest waterfalls in the world.

That all sounded absolutely fine to me, especially as we get to visit an Indian village along the way too.

If you like South America you can also take a trek across the Atacama desert in Chile or visit the Torres del Paine National Park with its daunting glacial landscape.  Chile has it all, from volcanic regions to forests, salt lakes and canyons lined with cowboy style cactii.  Just watch the spikes!  There are also the geysers of El Tatio or the Valle de la Muerte, also known as the Valley of Death. Don’t forget to look up the fortress Pucara de Quitor, built soon after 1,000 AD too.

If you can, don’t miss out on an opportunity to visit Easter Island.  Home of the iconic and legendary ‘moai’ statues, this is one of the most remote settlements on the planet.  If you’re looking to ‘get away from it all’, you can’t get much more away from it than Easter Island – it’s around 2,200 miles away from the Chilean coast.  This trip is not for the unfit though so a pair of hiking boots and a good bit of practice beforehand won’t go amiss.  Walking on the treadmill in the gym doesn’t quite hack it.

So far, so good, so … spider free? Are you kidding?

South America is home to the largest ever spider in the world, the Goliath Bird Eater.   A tarantula called the Goliath Bird Eater?!! Apparently it earned its name when a Victorian explorer saw one eating a hummingbird.  What’s worse, these guys hiss extremely loudly at you by rubbing the bristles on their legs together.  A hissing, bird-eating spider called Goliath with 12 inch legs?  Well, David I am not.  What’s worse they live in burrows in the ground and pounce on their prey!  South America?

‘Can we look elsewhere?’ I begged pathetically, with visions of a mutant spider chasing me across the Chilean landscape flashing through my mind.  OK, I know it’s the north of South America they tend to inhabit, but have you never heard of migration?

 Maybe I was too hopeful with this fitness bit.  We’re looking at the safety of safari holidays now as an alternative.  No Goliath spiders in Africa, I’m assured.  Just a few big cats.

Visiting Gay bars can be a good activity when visiting Castro, there are several choices of bars available where the gays are hanging out and probably make a hook up. It can be a good place for have a relaxing time and taking some drinks and see some sights. Restaurants can be another choice for having relaxing time and looking for delicious meals. It can be a good place to meet some friend and gather up.  Visiting a city with a good gay scene can be interesting since there will be warm community to meet. Another important thing that everybody should know is the parking regulation in Castro; beware and be aware for not breaking the regulations.

But for many, this yearned for retreat from the stress of work, comes with its own problems, namely the compromises, arguments and military planning that often come with the decision to travel with other people. While at home, your friends, family and spouse may well be your favourite people in the world, there’s nothing like long-haul flights, map-reading and trying to decipher a foreign language to turn the happiest union into a quarrelling mess.

With this in mind, many people are eschewing the traditional holiday experience, and setting off on their own to discover new lands (and maybe a little something about themselves) on their own. Go wild on a safari – see nature in its purest and rawest form with an exhaustive number of national parks and reserves that cater for every budget and whim. Of course you look good in your field jacket; khaki shorts and floppy hat just settle back and keenly observe the life and death struggle of the big and small beasts in your temporary neighbourhood.

Freewheel your cares away – what better way to explore some of the world’s most fascinating landscapes than getting on your bike and riding? Travelling on two wheels is one of the best ways of discovering the sights, sounds, texture, and smells of a new land. Many countries have established routes for you to follow that are brimming with pedal-powered fun.  You’ll come across more than enough views to keep you occupied and happy, such as gorgeous landscapes, ancient villages and hidden gems that the tourist pack never gets to see.

Take a hike – walking holidays are a fantastic way to meet other single travellers. Whether you fancy a leisurely stroll in the Pyrenees, or a battle against the elements on Mt Kilimanjaro, walking or trekking is a great way to get to know people and develop a great sense of camaraderie as you scale a mountain, cross a river or complete a three day hike. Plus, singles holidays on foot can be a great place to meet that special someone. After all, what could be more romantic than gazing out over the French countryside at sunset with the wind in your hair and the satisfaction of an exhilarating day’s walking in your heart? Kissing gates have never been more appealing!

Live a dog’s life- For something a little different, head to the frozen tundra of the Scandinavian wilderness, get yourself wrapped up in pelts, coats and that awful but oh-so-snug Christmas jumper bought for you by Auntie Nora and get yourself on a sledging holiday. You’ll take control of a pack of beautiful husky dogs and bomb along the snow and ice at breath-taking speeds, marvelling at the beautiful landscapes and amazing stamina and teamwork of your pack. As a member of their team, you’ll bond closely with the dogs and help ensure they’re well fed, watered and rested and by the time you leave you may just find yourself communicating in barks and yelps!
